Pond and Lake Stocking

Fish species selection for pond stocking is as important as any of the other steps you will take to create a beautiful and thriving pond or lake. An overabundance of one species of fish can throw the others out of balance having detrimental and often costly effects on a pond overall. This is where science and years experience become crucial. Davis Fish Farms draws on over 23 years of experience at raising and managing fish on a family owned fish farm.

Fish Habitat enhancement

Creating the right underwater habitat to support a healthy fish population is an extremely beneficial step to take in creating the perfect environment for fish and other organisms to thrive. The fact is - fish need cover. Cover consists of underwater structures such as downed trees, stumps, rocks, plants and even deep holes that allow fish to hunt, hide, rest and reproduce.

Vegetation Management

Davis Fish Farms has over 50 years of combined aquatic plant management experience and will address any problematic plant problems you are faced with. Desirable aquatic plants do play an important role in lake and pond ecosystems because they provide food and habitat to fish, wildlife and aquatic organisms. Plants stabilize sediments, improve water clarity and add diversity to the shallow areas of lakes, but can at times become a nuisance if plant populations grow beyond an acceptable amount.  Biological control via grass carp and/or tilapia, chemical control by applying EPA approved aquatic herbicides, and cultural control by lowering lake levels at certain times of the year are methods Davis Fish Farms utilizes to manage aquatic vegetation challenges that pond and lake owners are faced with.

Fertizlization

Fertilization is an important step in increasing the overall health and productivity of your pond or lake by promoting healthy, rapid growth of fish, plants and animals living in the water. As not all ponds or lakes require fertilization, Davis Fish Farms/Pond and Lake Services would appreciate the opportunity to assess your pond or lake to determine if fertilization would be beneficial and make recommendations for an optimal fertilization schedule.

Pond and lake liming

Pond liming is an essential step in neutralizing the acidity of water and soil with the goal of bringing your ponds pH level into a neutral state perfect for aquatic plants and animals. Fish, frogs, salamanders and other aquatic creatures can become stressed in water with a high acidity. This stress results in a reduced resistance to disease, less successful reproductive cycles and a slower overall growth rate and level of health.

water quality testing

A thorough and up-to-date assessment of the water quality of your pond or lake is the most important aspect of pond management where animals and plant life are concerned. Water quality can be determined by the biological, chemical and physical attributes of your pond. Davis Fish Farms/Pond and Lake Services can assess all aspects of your ponds water quality, make recommendations and perform treatments as necessary that will either improve the quality or help maintain the quality of water found in your pond or lake.

electrofishing survey

Determines the number, species and predator to prey fish ratio in your pond or lake and is an important step in producing an overall larger and healthier fish population.  Davis Fish Farms/Pond and Lake Services uses state of the art electroshock fishing techniques to identify the species, size, number, and growth rates of the fish in your pond or lake.  An initial sampling and analysis can then be used as the basis for establishing a pond management plan where corrective stocking, harvesting, and unwanted species removal will bring your pond's fish population into an optimal balanced state. Let's find out what is in your pond or lake.
